Atherton Tablelands Accommodation News page for new and returning guests to see what's changed, what's happening, and what's new here at Barking Owl Retreat.
The Brangus Steer's are progressing well and after a wet winter we were looking forward to dryer days although we are now ready for rain with everything quite dry in November. Well let's hope the rain is finally here with showers today and storms predicted for the rest of the week. Then Xmas holidays will be great on the Tablelands with greener scenery and water in the Dam. The Dam is quite low at the moment but still open to recreation. (Skiing, etc.)
Meet 'Jaffa' above our new Red Australian Cattle dog. She is a mate for 'Bear'. She is so cheeky and full of energy. The photo above is after she had been sticking her nose in the garden herb pots after I watered so she was covered in mud. 'Jaffa' also loves water and goes crazy whenever the hose its turned on. She is learning slowing but surely that the Guinea Fowls are not dinner. I just hope she doesn't get bitten by the geese as she is the only dog not afraid of them!
'Jaffa' and 'Kato' play constantly when she is awake and get pretty rough at times! But it is all in good fun. 'Jaffa' is growing so fast so we give her as many cuddles as we can while she is small enough and her ears are already pricked at only 11 weeks old.
The Guinea Fowl keets are now fully grown and I think the mum is sitting on a nest again, so before long we will have baby keets again with some luck.
The geese had their third season of goslings pictured here. 'Billy' who turned out to be a boy, is now fully grown and protecting his brothers and sisters. 'Lilly' had 7 goslings again although we lost one that was weak upon hatching. We have sold 5 goslings and 'Billy' to protect them to the breeding farm in Malanda again so we now only have 'Lilly' 'Tully' and baby 'Talluluh'. I am hoping she is a girl this time! For those of you who enjoy Mountain Bike riding, Bush walking, or Trail running, the Mt Baldy walking Tracks and Mountain Bike Tracks have had a lot of work done on them for all to enjoy. Makes and active excuse to come and stay at Barking Owl Retreat so bring your bike or your joggers or both. The wild Mallard ducks pictured below frequent the goose pond at the house. We also stocked 20 Barra in the dam couple of months ago so we hope they can be a bit of fishing fun in the future.
Our News page will be updated from time to time as we improve and update Barking Owl Retreat to ensure all our guests have the most enjoyable time here! Last updated 18/11/13.
